Design philosophy

my design philosophy

To me, the perfect paddle or cane is both functional and aesthetically appealing. It will draw you in like a sculpture in a gallery. Upon being picked up it will feel like it was made to fit your hand and you won’t want to put it down. And of course there is the memorable impression it will make upon those at the end of its swing.

Each of my wooden paddles and canes is unique. They vary in shape, size, design, added detail, and of course timber choice. I do not use templates or detailed plans when creating each piece, nor have I ever sought to make two the same. Rather I prefer to work from scratch on every creation, sketching designs directly onto the wood before starting work with a saw, followed by any number of other woodworking tools.
